Textile, Happiness

This is a Textile. It was designed by Larsen Design Studio and produced by Jack Lenor Larsen Incorporated. It is dated 1967 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton, viscose rayon and its technique is hand screen printed on twill weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Happiness, one of Larsen’s signature prints, remained in the line for almost twenty years. A hand-screen-printed upholstery and drapery fabric, the design is based on Chinese wave bands and cloud scrolls, re-interpreted as a psychedelic pattern. “When I was in school and visited the Seattle Art Museum,” he recalled, “they had wonderful Asian collections that included fabulous fabrics. I made photographs, especially the beautiful Ming dynasty robes.” Larsen has remained a great lover and collector of Asian art.
Happiness was introduced in 1968 as part of the Kublai Kahn Collection in four colorways—Amethyst Quartz, Ming Gold, Lacquer Red, and Mandarin Blue. Three additional colorways – Red Earth, Roselake, and Blonde – were introduced later.
