In this vertical composition of a wooded scene, an armored knight on horseback is featured prominently. The knight and horse face to the left, as if posed. The horse lifts one leg, and the knight holds a long, slim lance over his right shoulder. A long sword hangs at his hip. Behind the horse appears the figure of Death, also on horseback, holding an hourglass. He turns his emaciated face toward the knight, mouth open as if in speech. He has a long beard and wears a crown, through which snakes wind their lithe bodies. To the rear of the horse stands a Devil in the form of a monster, round eyes set into a furry face, a long, dog-like snout with upturned nose and bared teeth, with one long, curving horn, long, pointed, goat-like ears, and curling rams horns. A patterned, leathery wing falls over his shoulder. On the ground, beneath the knight’s horse’s feet, a dog runs, between a small lizard and a skull. In the background, a town rises in the distance, atop a hill.
