This vertical composition is divided into two sections, one scene which takes place in the sky, and a second which occupies the ground, below. The upper section, comprised of and encircled by clouds, shows an adult Christ in the center, seated, with the Virgin Mary seated at left, and Saint John the Evangelist seated at right. Christ is nude from the waist up, his legs covered in generous drapery. His arms are raised straight outward from his shoulders, with elbows bent and forearms up like a goalpost, palms raised toward to viewer. His expression is calm, and his shoulder-length hair appears to move as if in a breeze. Lines of light emanate from behind his head, to give the effect that he is radiant. The Virgin Mary, at the left, raises her left hand to her chest, her opposite arm straight alongside her torso, and her neck craned toward Christ, her attention rapt. A veil flows out behind her, further indicating the direction of her focus. She has an oval halo behind her profiled head, a circle of blank page incised from the darker clouds. Saint John the Evangelist is also nude from the waist up with drapery around his lower half. He is turned away from the viewer, exposing his back, but his head is turned toward us over his shoulder. His right hand is raised, pointing toward Christ, and his other hand rests in his lap. He also has a halo, which cuts a bright circle against the dark background. A knobby tree trunk connects the celestial scene to the ground beneath Saint John at the far right side. Beside this tree, to the left kneels Saint Catherine, a woman with a halo, who looks up toward the scene in the sky. She holds a long, thin, quill in her right hand, and is knelt over the top half of a spiked wheel, which emerges from the ground. Her other hand is pressed to her chest. Opposite Saint Catherine, and beneath the Virgin Mary, stands the bearded figure of Saint Paul, dressed in robes and positioned as if mid-step, walking in the direction of Saint Catherine. He, too, bears a halo, and also carries a sword, its hilt in his right hand near his right hip, and the blade resting upward over his right shoulder.
