This horizontally composed image has several separate scenes contained within. To the left of center, a statue of the bust of a bearded man on a high, smooth plinth divides the frame. The base of the statue is engraved with Latin words in all capital letters. To the left of the statue, in the foreground, a man in a short-sleeved tunic holds a torch before him, illuminating a heap of lambs slumped listlessly atop one another, apparently dead. Behind them, a young bull is resting nearby a dark set of stairs, looking at the scene. The stairs lead up to an archway in the side of a darkened building, which rises up behind the torchlit foreground. A window in the dark room seen through the archway streams light dramatically onto a bedside scene, where two women stand above a man, reclining on the bed. Latin words appear in the rays of light through the window. The right side of the image is much lighter in tone, if not in subject matter. In the foreground, a man bends over the apparently lifeless form of a woman, one hand pressed over his mouth. The other hand reaches out toward a child, who lays on top of the woman, but looks away from her, toward the left. To the left of the child is another person, leaning on the base of the statue, with their head buried in their bent arms. It is unclear whether they are distressed or deceased. A man behind them, in shadow, flees the scene in apparent disgust, his hand raised and face, turned back over his scrunched shoulder, showing his displeasure. His gesture is reflected in the body language of the woman at the far right, just behind the bent over man. She looks away toward the right, her hand in front of her face with palm outwards as if to shun the whole scene. In the space between these two gestures of revulsion, a grassy area with a dead horse meets the edge of a group of buildings, perhaps a compound, or the edge of a town, with a group of four people depicted faintly beside trees.
