A group of figures (primarily men) are gathered in the right foreground of this vertical composition before a dark-toned building with a column and archway. The men are dressed in renaissance clothing with caps and voluminous sleeved garments. Some children play near their feet, to the left. One bearded man stands almost at center, facing the viewer, but with one hand extended to guide the focus toward the background, where the scene recedes deeply into space in the narrow area between the building and the page’s edge. Another man, with his back turned, stands at the middle-ground of this area. He points toward a taller building in the far background, echoing the directive gesture of his counterpart in the foreground. The building toward which both figures gesture has high walls and stands at the edge of an open space, perhaps a square, where groups of people stand together facing this structure. A basket is suspended out of one of the windows of this fort-like building.
