A statue of a man on horseback on a pedestal occupies the foreground of this vertical composition. He is Marcus Aurelius, and faces to the left. He has curly hair and a beard, and is clothed in draping fabric, which falls in pleats and folds over his left shoulder. His right arm extends forward, behind the head and thick neck of the horse on which he is seated. The horse stands upright, with one front leg raised and bent, midair, wearing a bridle with decorative roundels. Aurelius is seated on a decorated blanket, spread over the horse’s back. The pedestal on which the pair are presented is made of stone, with a three line capitalized Latin inscription. Through the spaces between the horse’s legs, in the background, is a wall of Rome with the ruins of the mausoleum of Augustus.
