At the left is an inscription (in ink) by the artist, which reads: "Notte// D'après le tracail de cet(te) variente/ le graveur calquera tout ce qu'il pourra/ sur le grand dessin, et ne prendre de c(ete)/ variente que l'indispensable.// Je préfer la variente avec les nuages/que je crois tres inécutable par le ton/ simple qu'ils ont et qui feroit --?--/ mieux que le fond a feuille de treffle, lequel/ seroit trop compassé entre les arbres. it/ est convenable que dans un sujet de paysage,/ it entre en bout de nuages pour rappeler qu'il. y a de l'air.//J'ai cru indispensable de laisser un bout/ de fumée là où il y a du feu".
