Book Clasp (probably Italy)

This is a Book clasp. It is dated probably 17th century and we acquired it in 1903. Its medium is gilt silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Samuel P. Avery. It is credited Gift of Samuel P. Avery.

A tangled cascade of silver flower and leaf shapes falls from a bare light bulb, which is almost concealed by the foliage. Black and white flowers and leaves accent the mass of strands. The metal shapes are clumped in a thicket at the top of the form before thinning out at the bottom, showing the silhouettes of the flowers and leaves.
