Clock with Stand Clock

This is a clock. It is dated ca. 1770s and we acquired it in 1908. Its medium is copper, enamel, gilt bronze, glass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was bequest of Katherine Strong Welman. It is credited Bequest of Katherine Strong Welman.

Rectangular vanity case composed of a colorful assortment of semi-precious and precious materials. The top is rich green carved jadeite plaques depicting four smiling figures surrounded by lush plants and animals: a bird at left and a deer at right. The scene is studded with diamonds and bright pink cabochon rubies in platinum and gold settings. A thin line of deep blue enamel encloses the scene, continuing to the curved front edge, which is decorated with an interlocking geometric design in deep blue enamel on gold. The sides feature striped bands of orange carnelian and purple amethyst interspersed with diamonds. The thumbpiece, centered on the front edge, is similarly decorated. The short sides are deep blue, gold-flecked lapis lazuli, the same color as the enamel.

A rectangular, shallow vanity case with a central inlaid panel of two figures in a garden. The rest of the case is mother-of-pearl etched with geometric designs. The inlaid panel is made from iridescent shell in shades of green-blue, sky blue, and purple-pink, on a black enamel background. Two robed figures stand in conversation in a garden, with a leafy branch overhead and a bridge in the background. Sparkling chips of shell glitter below the bridge and along the ground. The right figure’s right arm is crossed over their body to gesture over their left shoulder, while their left hand sweeps toward the other figure. This figure’s hands are bundled up against their body in the long trailing sleeves of their robe. Both figures have round faces and full hairstyles. A bright gold frame encloses the panel. The remainder of the case is shimmering white mother-of-pearl inscribed with geometric designs filled in with deep blue enamel. The border surrounding the panel is overlapping circles with small diamonds at center. The sides have a design of short diagonal lines and dots, like a broken basket weave. The rounded edges of the case are deep blue enamel or lapis lazuli bordered in gold, with panels of rectangular cabochon turquoises and diamonds centered on each top edge.

A rectangular vanity case with bright pink enamel stripes at the sides, which are outlined with thin black enamel strips, and set with round diamonds, accented by baguette diamonds. Along the top center runs a stripe of cream enamel with a gold floral design. At the top end of this stripe there a small, square, cream watch face, with black Arabic numerals and gold hour and minute hands. The watch face is outlined with small round diamonds. The sides of the case are set with alternating rock crystal and amethyst segments, accented with baguette diamonds. There is a small, diamond button clasp on the bottom edge of the case.
