The larger teardrop is made up of flowers and leaves and is angled to the right. Both are set against a brown background which is somewhat damaged and has a circular printed stamp in the bottom right.

Drawing, Design for Woven Paisley

This is a Drawing. It is dated 1825–40 and we acquired it in 1909. Its medium is brush and orange-pink gouache on brown oiled translucent paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Pattern drawers would first draft their paisley designs onto plain paper, usually in gouache. The pattern would then be transferred onto point paper, a type of specialized graph paper for planning weaving drafts, before being turned over for production.

This object was donated by Eleanor Garnier Hewitt and Sarah Cooper Hewitt. It is credited Gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt.
