A string of flowers extends from the bottom left of the square toward the top right. Flowers are stacked on one another; first is a flower that has orange petals and is bordered by white leaves, with each petal curving downward. Above it is a flower that has orange and yellow petals, with three rows of petals, the third of which curving tightly into a circle. The last flowers are lavender in color and small, bulbous in shape. They are tightly packed together, like a bouquet. Off of this row blossom random, freefloating, lavender color flowers, filling in the square.

Drawing, Design for a Woven or Embroidered Corner Motif

This is a Drawing. It is dated 1810–30 and we acquired it in 1925. Its medium is brush and gouache on oiled translucent paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

The exuberant and explosive power of this large-scale floral design perfectly illustrates how designers approached flowers, making them active rather than passive forms of ornamentation. Skilled embroiderers retained the same essence of vitality in their needlework for waistcoats.

This object was donated by Advisory Council. It is credited Purchased for the Museum by the Advisory Council.
