Sidewall (possibly England)

This is a sidewall. It is dated 1880–1890 and we acquired it in 1931. Its medium is block printed on ribbed paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

This wallpaper is a combination of Eastern and Western inspiration, blending traditional Japanese motifs with tropical plants and roses in a decidedly Western format. The ceramic vase, tracery, and organic rock forms are all Japanese in nature, while the design density and metallic copper moiré ground were popular Western conventions.

It is credited Gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt.

Its dimensions are

46 x 53.5 cm (18 1/8 x 21 1/16 in.)
