Cup with "Etruscan" Handles and Saucer (Gobelet à Anses Etrusques et Soucoupe) Cup And Saucer

This is a Cup and saucer. It was manufactured by Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory. It is dated 1795–1805 and we acquired it in 1931. Its medium is porcelain (possibly soft paste), vitreous enamel, gold. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Sarah Cooper Hewitt and Eleanor Garnier Hewitt. It is credited Gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt.

Its dimensions are

H x W x D (cup): 8.2 × 12.5 × 8.5 cm (3 1/4 × 4 15/16 × 3 3/8 in.) H x W (saucer): 4 × 17 cm (1 9/16 × 6 11/16 in.)

It has the following markings

Underside of cup: [1] cursive "Sevres", painted in gold (probably decoration mark) [2] cursive "M", incised Underside of saucer: [1] cursive "Sevres" above "Dr." and "Mr." (?), with horizontal cursive bracket beneath, painted or transfer-printed in gold (possibly decoration mark) [2] "G", incised [3] 3, painted in yellow

It is inscribed

Underside of saucer: [1] cursive "Nettie à Son amie Thim ." underlined, painted or transfer-printed (?) in gold Front of cup: [1] "MC" or "CM" interlaced, painted
