This is a Drawing. It was designed by Saverio della Gatta. It is dated 1828 and we acquired it in 1931. Its medium is black chalk, pen and black ink, brush and watercolor on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Artist Saverio della Gatta depicted many Italian landscapes and Neapolitan scenes of everyday life. In this watercolor, he shows a group of elite travelers journeying by sedan chair, which is supported by a caravan of horses. Through the glass windows, the fashionable couple enjoys the view of a smoking Mount Vesuvius, distant mountains, and architectural ruins.

This object was donated by Eleanor Garnier Hewitt and Sarah Cooper Hewitt. It is credited Gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt.
