Textile, Strawberry Thief
This is a Textile. It was designed by William Morris and manufactured by Morris & Co.. It is dated 1883 and we acquired it in 1935. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.
One of Morris’s best known designs, this furnishing textile depicts the annual struggle to protect the strawberry beds from the greedy thrushes at Morris’s countryside home of Kelmscott Manor. From 1871 to 1896 the Manor and the flora and fauna of its gardens provided abundant inspiration for Morris’s designs and writing as he passed the summers there.
