Sidewall, Single Stem
This is a sidewall. It was designed by John Henry Dearle and manufactured by Jeffrey & Company. It is dated 1905 and we acquired it in 1935. Its medium is block-printed on continuous paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
John Henry Dearle began his career with Morris & Co. as a teenage shop assistant in their retail store on Oxford Street. By 1890, Dearle had become chief designer for Morris & Co. after working for two decades in departments including stained glass, tapestry, and textiles. He favored large leafy florals and historical decorative motifs. Here, scrolling oversized acanthus leaves balance bold orange blossoms.
