Sidewall, Marigold

This is a sidewall. It was designed by William Morris and manufactured by Jeffrey & Company. It is dated 1875 and we acquired it in 1935. Its medium is block-printed. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

Woven silk textile with a lushly illustrated, surface-filling botanically-inspired motif on a restrained color combination of light pink on a dark pink background. The repeated motif consists of two vertical columns with bowls of grapes and other fruits resting on a pair of flower-filled cornucopias. The cornucopias are bound together with a ribbon, and are symmetrically oriented outwards from the bowl. Large curving, feathery Acanthus leaves top each bowl and are oriented like the cornucopias, with two tulip flowers at the center of the Acanthus leaves. The motif appears simplified and flattened, with just hints of shading. The flowers are depicted in a stylized way, yet with a variety of shapes that are reminiscent of actual flowers like bellflowers or black-eyed Susan vines, for example.
