Textile (France)

This is a Textile. It was designed by Charles Plumet and manufactured by Tassinari & Chatel. It is dated 1910–14 and we acquired it in 1932. Its medium is silk, cotton and its technique is cut and uncut supplementary warp pile in a satin foundation (velvet). It is a part of the Textiles department.

It is credited Museum purchase from Au Panier Fleuri Fund.

A) Handwoven sample for fabric with a color-and weave effect. Bright red-orange fine cotton warp. The weft alternates one thin green silk yarn with a paired weft of off-white cotton bouclé yarn and off-white silk. Narrow band at top and a thicker bottom of plain weave with green silk weft. Red fringe lines the top and bottom of the sample while the left edge has off-white and green fringe. B) Close-up of the handwoven fabric sample, the intricate combination of red-orange cotton and yellow-green silk yarn are clearly woven in a warp/weft construction. Tiny squares of off-white yarn are outlined by red and green pieces of yarn woven together.

A drawing illustrating the luxuriously decorated alcove of a grand salon, with a patterned carpet, royal blue walls, velvet curtains, a gilded ceiling and various paintings lining the walls. The alcove is separated from the rest of the room by a golden arch with four columns and a decorated frieze. Inside the alcove is a desk with a chair, a pale blue armchair and a window which floods the room with light. Outside a large crystal chandelier hangs from a royal blue rope and two exotic plants stand next to a gilded dresser and a table. We are given a glimpse into the next room by an open wooden paneled door, which is surrounded by royal blue velvet curtains and a painted frieze with a carved golden frame which extends down the sides of the door to the floor.
