Manuscript label on recto: "Widow Mrs. Samuel Hammong Jr. formerly Miss Greene, Boston 16th Novemb. 1841. Oct. 22nd March 1844." Inscription on verso: "Mrs. Sam Hammond Jr. Boston, Novber 16th 1841." Black frame labelled: "This silhouette... was cut by August Edouart during his visit to the U.S. 1839-1849. ARthur S. Vernay 12 East 45th Street New York."
