An oil sketch of a snowy mountain-valley landscape at sunset. The upper half of the painting is sky: dappled apricot-orange clouds and purple-grey wisps against pale blue. The sky brightens to orange-pink along the irregular line of the deep purple-grey mountains cutting across the painting, with a bright yellow-white spot at center left marking the sun sinking below the ridge. The lower half of the painting is filled with the valley below the mountains. Soft horizontal marks of bluish purple-grey and light blue-grey suggest the trees and rolling, snow-covered ground. In the left foreground is a spiky stand of dark brown-grey evergreen trees, cut off by a pale blue-grey snowy slope slanting across the right foreground. The orange of the sunset is gently reflected by a pinkish tone in the snow. A bare black shrub or small tree pokes up from the snow on the hill.
