Drawing, View of the Catskills from the Village of Catskill

This is a Drawing. It was created by Frederic Edwin Church. It is dated ca. 1844 and we acquired it in 1917. Its medium is oil and graphite on cardboard. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

This view of the Catskills, from which one sees the Catskill Mountain House, was a favorite of both Thomas Cole and Frederic Church. “High on the face of South Mountain, or rather between it and its northern neighbor, your eye detects a small speck, hanging like a swallow’s nest upon a wall, white and glistening in the sun. It is the Mountain House, from the broad piazza of which three or four hundred human beings are perhaps, at this moment, looking out over the landscape which lies beneath them like a map.”

—Henry A. Brown
