Sidewall, The House that Jack Built
This is a Sidewall. It was designed by Walter Crane and manufactured by Jeffrey & Company. It is dated 1886 and we acquired it in 1938. Its medium is machine-printed paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.
The popularity of Crane’s children’s book illustrations earned him a commission to design his first nursery paper in 1875, and he began designing more general use papers the following year. The House That Jack Built, drawn in the Aesthetic style, illustrates the lyrics of the popular British nursery rhyme and cumulative tale line by line. Crane’s use of color and delightfully-drawn figures would be engaging to a child, and make learning fun.
