Snuff Box (France)

This is a snuff box. It is dated ca. 1750 and we acquired it in 1967. Its medium is carved bloodstone, chased and engraved gold, cut diamonds, rubies, emeralds. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

A small, flattened disc-shaped container with painted imagery. The bottom portion of the container is a smooth dark brown, whose only decoration is a slim gold toned rim. The top cover contains a painted pastoral scene in muted colors of green, beige, brown and grey. The painting fills the entire circular surface. A large leafy tree anchors the composition and is placed slightly off center and to the right. Beneath the tree are two figures, one seated and one standing, engaged in conversation. In the middle left hand side of the painting is a portion of a stone building with an arched doorway framed by two classical pillars. Slightly in front of the doorway is a four-wheeled covered carriage with three windows and pulled by four horses, which are shown in silhouette. In the distance is a faint depiction of another building. The sky is rendered with dense low clouds and blue skies above. At the bottom of the scene, in the foreground, is a small cluster of greenery with two short vertical wood stumps jutting upward.

On inside rim of box: Paris maker's mark (indecipherable); ox head, Paris mark of charge under Julien Berth, 1750-1756; crowned italic "K", warden's mark for 1750-1757; on rims of both covers marks struck twice: eagle's head with single outline, Paris mark for gold, restricted warranty, 1838-1847; anvil, or reverse, mark, struck at the same time as previous mark.
