Geometria Bowl

This is a bowl. It is dated 1924 and we acquired it in 1968. Its medium is painted and glazed porcelain. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Ponti, an architect, writer, and painter, and a pioneer of Italy’s postwar design renaissance, served as artistic director of the Richard-Ginori ceramics firm from 1923 to 1930. During this time, Ponti focused on the Art Deco style, exemplified in this bowl. Art Deco, inspired in part by Cubism, employed linear forms to create somewhat abstracted decoration, seen here in this bowl’s vertical and horizontal striping and graphic floral motifs.

It is credited Museum purchase from General Acquisitions Endowment.
