Diamond-shaped pattern, repeating five times per row, in eight rows. At the base of the narrow, vertically-long diamond is a face, appearing to have its mouth covered by cloth. Stemming out of the face -- both to the sides and straight upward -- is a floral pattern, rich in greens with red flowers at the borders.

Textile (Russia)

This is a Textile. It is dated 19th–early 20th century and we acquired it in 1968. Its medium is silk, metal-wrapped silk and its technique is woven. It is a part of the Textiles department.

The ancient Slavic symbology around the Tree of Life can often be seen in Russian embroidery and textiles. Here, the flowering pot motif may be an amalgamation of the traditional depiction of the tree of life and incoming textiles with the potted paisley cones.
