Sidewall, Bachelor's Wall Paper

This is a sidewall. It was created by Charles Dana Gibson and manufactured by M.H. Birge & Sons Co.. It is dated 1902 and we acquired it in 1971. Its medium is machine-printed paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

“Bachelor’s Wall Paper” features the charming Gibson Girl, the fictional New Woman illustrated by Charles Dana Gibson beginning in the 1890s. The Gibson Girl was the idyllic American woman: full of grace and class, with just the right amount of confidence and charm. Gibson’s illustration first appeared in Life Magazine and the popularity of his drawings quickly led to the creation of this wallpaper.

Frame still from Expression Portrait, we have six black and white photographs against a black background. Each photograph shows six different people with varying facial expressions, photographed from the shoulders up. The top left figure has long hair with their mouth open with their eyes slightly downward. The top center figure also has long hair, mouth closed, eyes gazing at the camera. The figure on the top right has short hair, head pulled back, forehead wrinkled from expression, face contorted in an open-mouthed frown with wide, open eyes, teeth visible. Bottom left figure has pulled back hair and is gazing directly at the camera with closed mouth, as is the bottom center person too. The bottom right individual has a short haircut with both eyes and mouth closed. Underneath the six photos reads a caption, 'However, many emotions impact our faces in culturally specific ways.'
