Sidewall (France)

This is a sidewall. It is dated 1810–30 and we acquired it in 1972. Its medium is block printed on handmade paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

The simple nature of this floral pattern in grisaille gives it a strong graphic quality. Being printed in only three colors would have made this more affordable. Small repeating patterns have been popular since the early nineteenth century and the neutral palette would invite the use of brightly colored fabrics and costumes.

This object was donated by Josephine Howell. It is credited Gift of Josephine Howell.

Its dimensions are

80.5 x 49 cm (31 11/16 x 19 5/16 in.)
