Vehicle Control Knob (USA)

This is a vehicle control knob. It was designed by Henry Dreyfuss Associates and made for (as the client) General Motors. It is dated ca. 1937 and we acquired it in 1972. Its medium is chrome, plastic. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Henry Dreyfuss. It is credited Gift of Henry Dreyfuss.

Round medal made out of silver-plated brass. Sections of the outer edges of the medal are embossed with text. “TO THE ADVANCEMENT OF” on the upper-right section and “MOTOR TRANSPORTATION” on its lower-left. At the center is an embossed rendering of a stylized car with vertical wings. At the bottom of this symbol is the text “NORMAN BEL GEDDES © 1933”

A black thin elegant rectangular form with rounded corners on a light gray slanted stand made of die-cast aluminum and steel in two textures colored in matte black resting on a curved part of a white table. A person’s hand wearing a light gray ribbed sweater cuff hovers above the equipment creating a light shadow on the table and the sensory interface and a shadow appears behind the equipment onto the table. The camera’s eye photographs the interface on the same level as the interface and it is turned away from the camera so you are able to capture the front, right side and bottom view called an isometric view.
