Drawing, Design for Carpet, Auditorium, International Casino, 1530 Broadway, New York, NY

This is a Drawing. It was architect: Thomas W. Lamb and Nicholas H. Weiss and from the office of Donald Deskey and drafted by Donald Deskey and made for (as the client) International Casino and Louis Brecker. It is dated ca. 1937 and we acquired it in 1975. Its medium is brush and brown, black and red gouache, black crayon on off-white illustration board. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Donald Deskey, a preeminent American twentieth-century designer with impressive range of creative imagination, was particularly successful at connecting people to the industrial age. Though some may not know him by name today, they can still see his design work in his sumptuous interiors for Radio City Music Hall or the number 10 light poles he designed for New York City in 1958. Deskey was a style setter in his day, particularly in the 1930s when American modernism was coming into its own. Together with the architects Thomas W. Lamb and Nicholas H. Weiss, Deskey designed the venerable though short-lived International Casino, which opened in September 1937 (it fizzled by March 1938). Located at 44th Street and Broadway in Times Square, the three-story Casino served as a nightclub, restaurant, and cocktail lounge, seating 2,500 people, and featuring a grand spiral bar over 200 feet long that allowed the venue to skirt a New York State requirement for only one bar per establishment. Deskey’s 1937 drawing for the nightclub’s carpet — black, rounded and interlaced shapes form a diamond pattern on an aubergine background — exemplifies the curvilinear trend popular at the time, balancing luxury with the repetition of machine production.

This object was donated by Donald Deskey. It is credited Gift of Donald Deskey.
