Sidewall (France)

This is a sidewall. It is dated 1850–60 and we acquired it in 1976. Its medium is block printed on machine made paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

The natural beauty of cascading waterfalls and rock ledges are combined with wooden stairs and bridges to create a trellis framework that encloses harbor views containing tall ships, windmills, and chateaus. The crisp blue of the water highlights the design’s nautical aspect and enlivens the monochrome taupe colorway.

This object was featured in our Object of the Week series in a post titled Medallion a la Mode.
