Seated Hindu Goddess Matchsafe
This is a matchsafe. It is dated late 19th century and we acquired it in 1978. Its medium is silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
The matchsafe developed out of the need for a safe way to carry friction matches, which were popular by 1840 but dangerous due to their tendency to combust when carried loose. This decorative matchsafe displays images in relief of a Hindu goddess on each side, seated on blank shields possibly intended to bear the owner’s monogram or crest.
