Print, Interior View of the Coburg Theater, London
This is a Print. It was designed by Jacob C. Schnebbelie and engraved by James Stow. It is dated 1819 and we acquired it in 1977. Its medium is etching, hand colored. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
This view shows the inaugural evening for the theater in 1818, with the play "Trial by Battle" in progress. The theater was named in honor of Princess Charlotte and her husband, Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg. After Princess Charlotte's death in 1833, the theater was renamed the Victoria, soon shortened to "Old Vic," by which name it is still famous today.
It is credited Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Richard B. Freund.
