Matchsafe (England)

This is a matchsafe. It was made by Frank Hyams Company. It is dated ca. 1900 and we acquired it in 1978. Its medium is nephrite, gold. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Carol B. Brener and Stephen W. Brener. It is credited Gift of Stephen W. Brener and Carol B. Brener.

A shallow rectangular vanity case, standing upright on a reflective surface against a white background. The front panel is pale, striated golden-pink agate stone. Centered on the front is a small square low-relief medallion depicting a pair of vessels on a deep green background, composed from carved semiprecious stones or enamel. At left is a short, rotund light green and blue footed pot; at right is a tall orange jar with its lid resting behind, topped with a spray of diamond leaves and round pink carved rubies. A diamond border encloses the plaque. Deep blue enamel decorates the edges and sides of the case. At top and bottom, a deep blue enamel motif set with a large diamond points to the center. The sides feature a meandering basket-weave pattern in blue enamel on gold. A large oval-shaped carved ruby thumbpiece in a gold fitting protrudes from the right side.

Rectangular green enamel nephrite case with a front compartment for cigarettes. There is a blue and red triangular design around the border of the case and along the top side which can be opened. One the side of the cigarette and mechanical pencil case is a compartment for matches with a striking surface. Under the lid which is embellished by a red and blue hue enamel pattern that resembles a rope design in gold. The front of the part of the thumbpiece is decoarted with sapphire and ruby gems. On the other side of the nephrite case is an old pencil that can be removed.
