Clock

This is a clock. It is dated ca. 1930 and we acquired it in 1979. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Analogue clock. Base is black, resembling a bracket facing upward, holding the rectangular shape of the clock's body. The sides and top are metal, as are the hands of the clock. The numbers are black and surrounded by a red border, whose shape resemebles grooves or gears of a watch. From the edges of the clock to the red border are shapes resembling triangles whose tips get cut off by the red circle. The shapes go around the red borer and alternate between grey and tan. Separating each of these shapes is a small, black rectangle placed along the adjacent edges of two shapes.

This clock has a layered, terraced shape like a pyramid or ziggurat. The staggered, angular forms seem to rise up and out from the stepped, footed rectangular base. The flat faces of some forms are decorated with bright robin’s egg blue, deep ultramarine blue, or black enamel; the rest of the clock is bright silvered bronze. The shape leading up to the round clock face is a tall narrow deep blue rectangle. Two flanking shapes, in bright blue and deep blue, angle out diagonally beneath the clock face. Small shapes in black and bright blue crown the top of the clock face. The small round cream-colored clock face has pale pink, deep blue, and black dots and triangles indicating the hours. Narrow triangles at 12, 4, and 8 point in toward the straight black clock hands. These shapes are repeated in the two patterned round accents below the clock face, with enamelled angular lines, circles, and half-circles in bright blue, deep blue, white, and black. The clock is incised at bottom right with the signature [JEAN GOULDEN].

This clock features a half-circle black onyx and white rock crystal dial atop a flat black onyx pedestal with four white rock crystal cushion feet. The center of the dial is black, with a translucent white carved design of swirling clouds with angular rays shooting out, like rays of light. Little wavy lines fan out around the black center, shaped to cup the numbers. The numbers are angular, shaped from glinting diamonds against the white border. From left to right, the dial is numbered 12, 1, 2, and so on, ending with 12 again on the right. A small arrow pointer is positioned between 3 and 4. The pedestal is a slab of highly reflective black onyx with sharp edges. Evenly spaced below the front edge are four ribbed, round feet in pinky-white rock crystal, like little cushions. Diamond notches above the feet make a sharp contrast to the black onyx.

A semi-mystery clock viewed in an upright position resting on a gold stand. The thick circular mount is fabricated in black onyx with a ring of small rose-cut diamonds set in platinum that borders the white enamel face with gold Roman numerals representing the hours while small gold dots represent the minutes continuing in a circular format. A beaded yellow gold bezel supports the glass case that houses the inner dial possessing a Guilloche design where translucent enamel covers a mechanically engraved repetitive pattern. In this case, a design resembling rays of light emanating from the right of center where the hour hand moves on a dial and is represented by a large rose-cut round multi-diamond star in nine points, eight of which are the same size while the ninth is longer and functions as a pointer to the hour. A larger diamond is centered in the star and appears to have a champagne hue. A smaller five pointed star, also diamond encrusted with a larger centered diamond, functions as a minute hand positioned right of the hour hand or star. The stars appear to be floating in space. This clock would fit in the palm of your hand and is photographed in a ¾ view toward the right reflected against a white surface.

Upright rectangular clock with a square, iridescent mother-of-pearl dial inlaid in a starburst pattern, surrounded by a diamond border and diamond-set Roman numerals in black enamel trim. The hands are also set with diamonds; the hour hand is shaped like a scalloped fan, the minute hand like a long blade. The hour and minute hands are set at 10 and 2. The clock face is bracketed at top and bottom with fluted, dark red-orange coral panels, framed in glossy black onyx. The sides and little flaring feet of the clock are also onyx, with gold detailing. At each side a round onyx arch with gold fittings anchors the clock to the rectangular stepped pedestal base. The tall top step is onyx; the shorter bottom two are gold. A scrolling inscription is centered on the front of the lowest step. All the edges of the clock and base are softly rounded over; the only sharp edges are in the numerals on the dial.
