This is a Patchwork cover. It is dated ca. 1910 and we acquired it in 1985. Its medium is silk, cotton and its technique is chromolithography printed on 7 & 1 satin, pieced and sewn. It is a part of the Textiles department.
Cigarette squares or top sheets were small pieces of silk inserted in the wooden boxes in which cigarettes were sold. They were often printed in series, such as state flowers or national flags, designed to be collected, swapped, and eventually patched together to make decorative table covers.
