Transparent Glass Matchsafe

This is a matchsafe. It was possibly by Edwin Henry Watts and retailed by Asprey & Son Co.. It is dated 1915–16 and we acquired it in 1980. Its medium is gold, glass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Geometric brooch, taking the form of a trapezoid. The body is outlined with a solid silver frame. Its center is translucent, with an off-white surface. The lower section of the brooch incorporates black thin bars in varying sizes. They are embedded in the actual body of the brooch. On the upper-right corner are long cornered bars bundled together. Included in this bundle are polished tourmaline quartz and ivory. Varying effects of light, space, and structure show depending on the position by which the brooch is presented.
