Paper print of two women, one standing while facing the viewer (figure 1) and one sitting on a chair completely turned away from the viewer (figure 2) and slightly behind figure 1. Although both figures wear long white shoulderless garments, they are accessorized differently; figure 1 (on the left side of page) , wears a white sun hat with a pastel pink ribbon wrapped around, draping and flowing behind her, along with matching pink flowers sprouting under and above the brim. Additionally, she wears a mostly black silk shawl with muted primary colored paisely details around the boarder, it drapes diagonally around her body and she holds the two ends together gently in one hand. The black shawl matches her black satin slippers and black ebroidery pattern on the front of her garment. Figure 2 (on the right side of the page) accessorizes with a white sun hat wrapped in white ribbon that flows around her head and pastel blue flowers sprouting from the top as will as beneath the brim of the hat. She sits in a small green wooden chair. It is apparent the subtle colors on this paper print are hand painted.

Print, Plate 59, Modes de Paris (Paris Fashion), Le Mercure de Salons (Mercury of the Salons)

This is a Print. It was published by Samuel and Joseph Fuller and made for Le Mercure de Salons. It is dated July 1830 and we acquired it in 1980. Its medium is engraving, hand-colored with brush and watercolor on off-white paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

In the advertisement for Paris Fashions from 1830, Le Mercure de Salons describes their shawls as "Cachemir des Indes," or Indian cashmere. Shawls in both of these plates are denoted by their paisley borders.
