Sugar Bowl And Lid (France)

This is a Sugar bowl and lid. It was designed by Jean Elysée Puiforcat. It is dated ca. 1928 and we acquired it in 1982. Its medium is silver, walnut. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

By the end of the 1920s, Jean Puiforcat's spherical pots set the stage for this form to dominate domestic design products for a broad market.

It is credited Museum purchase from General Acquisitions Endowment Fund.

Nickel-plated brass semi-spherical cup resting on two splayed strips of the metal, which serve as feet. Attached to the bottom as a handle is a thick-looking horizontal rectangular piece of the metal. It is rounded where it meets the cup, and ends in a vertical rectangle of dark wood. The dark silver-colored metal is quite tarnished. The cup is pictured with other matching objects in the set: a teapot, sugar bowl, and creamer.

Octagonal sterling tea and coffee service with double slabs of rectangular rosewood handles. There is a samovar-like water kettle, a tea and coffeepot, sugar, creamer, waste pot and tongs. The initials LMW are engraved in upper case block letters on the serving pieces.
