Vase (France)

This is a vase. It was designed by Emile Gallé and manufactured by Etablissement Gallé. It is dated ca. 1895 and we acquired it in 1949. Its medium is etched overlay glass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This example of overlay etching on glass involved layers glass, the darkest layer on the outside and gradually lightening further inward, which were then eroded away with acid. The etching process created this vase’s gradient color palette and raised floral pattern, the latter of which was popular in the Art Nouveau style, of which Gallé was a proponent.

This object was donated by Harry Harkness Flagler. It is credited Gift of Harry Harkness Flagler.
