Sidewall, The Peacock Garden

This is a sidewall. It was designed by Walter Crane and manufactured by Jeffrey & Company. It is dated 1889 and we acquired it in 1952. Its medium is block-printed paper, embossed. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

Peacock Garden is a dense design of flora and fauna printed in rich jewel-tone colors of blues and greens which impart a very calming, comforting influence. Typical of many of Crane’s designs there is pattern everywhere, with no blank spaces to be found. The bold peacocks are intertwined with scrolling acanthus leaves and tulips, while a lighter secondary pattern appearing like foliate sprigs covers the background.

This object was donated by James J. Rorimer. It is credited Gift of James J. Rorimer.
