Textile (Indonesia)

This is a Textile. It is dated ca. 1931 and we acquired it in 1951. Its medium is cotton and its technique is plain weave with spaced warps and wefts and discontinuous supplementary warp patterning (brocade). It is a part of the Textiles department.

This object was donated by Miss Frances Morris. It is credited Gift of Frances Morris.

Here we have a photograph of ninety-seven jamdani sari fabrics folded into rectangles, sitting on a table in front of a sunny window. The fabrics are stacked in piles. In varying patterns and colors, there are five piles and roughly twelve to fifteen fabric rectangles in each. Between the folds, some patterns can be made out: white fabric with light blue stripes, some with white and pink stripes, orange stripes, and green stripes. There are hints of floral patterns on a diagonal grid, and others with arrow-like shapes and triangles as well.
