Sidewall (France)

This is a sidewall. It is dated 1882–83 and we acquired it in 1950. Its medium is machine-printed paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

Novelty wallpaper showing a festive costume ball in an elaborate opera house. Patrons in exquisite costumes dance while an orchestra plays on stage. Rendered in deep perspective, the auditorium is quite similar in style to the recently completed Palais Garnier in Paris and captures its opulence and splendor.
