George Biddle (American, 1885–1973) was a prolific American artist who traveled widely to study drawing, print making, sculpting and painting early in his career. In 1919, after military service and a failed marriage, Biddle left for Tahiti to study print making, focusing on linocuts and woodcuts. This hand block print was made after Biddle returned to the United States in 1922 and shows two stylized male figures in a Polynesian-type boat. A schoolmate of Franklin D. Roosevelt at Groton School, Biddle also was instrumental in convincing the President to establish the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s.
