Print, Clarke's Relief Globe

This is a Print. It was print maker: J.M. Attwood and after G.P. Clarke. It is dated 1849 and we acquired it in 1953. Its medium is hand-colored etching . It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

This book is open to a spread on 'ASTRONOMY Solar System', printed in clean black text in the top left corner. Filling most of the right page and crossing onto the left is a large red circle, likely representing the sun, with text blocks and what appear to be photographs of sunspots (upper right, irregular black spots on a dark red background) and an eclipse (lower right, a black circle with an irregular white halo on a black background). The right half of the circle has illustrations suggesting the surface of the sun that continue out to the edge of the page. Outside the top right quarter of the circle, the page is black, with a mottled burnt-orange half circle projecting from the red circle. In the bottom right quarter there is a halo around the perimeter of the red circle, rays shading from white to light blue to inky dark blue to black. There are wispy red-orange lines trailing out from the edge of the red circle, stark against the white and light blue background. The remaining portion of the red circle, on the left page, has a greyscale illustration of the labelled planets of the solar system, stacked in a vertical line. The inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars) and Pluto are small black and white dots; black and grey striped Jupiter and ringed Saturn are very large; black-shaded Uranus and Neptune are medium-sized. Stretching across the top of the creamy white left page is an illustration of the planets' orbits. The sun, represented as a burst of dark red rays, sits in the top left corner, with the rays growing further apart to the right. The selected orbits are marked with five black arcs, the last continuing onto the right page. Below on the left page are text blocks and a table of figures. In the bottom left corner, below an open space, is an illustration of an eclipse. A medium-sized black and white circle represents the Earth, ringed by very small orbiting black and white moons. To the right is a large red sun. Crossed lines beaming from the sun and a shaded area on the Earth represent the direction of the sun's light.
