Favrile Bowl Vase, ca. 1895-96

This is a vase. It was overseen (as design director) by Louis Comfort Tiffany and produced by Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company. It is dated ca. 1895-96 and we acquired it in 1952. Its medium is free-blown favrile glass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Patented in 1894, Tiffany’s iridescent Favrile glass is striking when used to produce Art Nouveau forms like this vase, as the multidimensional colors are most noticeable on an irregular surface. Here, the color-shifting quality of the iridescent glass emphasizes the undulating form of the vase, enhancing the beauty of its naturally-inspired shape.

It is credited Gift of Anonymous Donor.
