Sidewall, Tudor Rose and Fleur de Lis

This is a sidewall. It was designed by A.W.N. Pugin and manufactured by Scott and Co.. It is dated 1848–60 and we acquired it in 1953. Its medium is block-printed and flocked on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

Shoehorn in a typical tapered cylindrical shape, upcurved at both ends. It is light-yellow brown adorned with engraved and black stained decoration. At top a fleur-de-lys over a band of guilloche, a pattern of intersecting spirals bound by black horizontal lines filled with a row of small diamonds on either side. This diamond pattern repeats in between each patterned section and engraved dots create shadow within each design. Below a series of three curved lines above a stylized flower-foliage cluster formed from a central narrow triangle surrounded by seven black striped leaves. A repeating arched pattern above three ovals with pinched edges complete the decoration. All are surrounded by a rope pattern and the inscription 'Robert Mindum made this shooing...(worn at top) s Gamlet Anno domini 1604'. A hole is pierced at narrow end.
