Handwritten note attached to separate sheet on mat: In 1835 F. Baxter took out a patent / color printing from wood Blocks to / outlines engraved on a copper key plate / giving the form / this use of woodblocks to print / color overall impressions from an / etched, engraved, or mezzotinted plate was / know long before, but Baxter applied more / color + consequently more blocks.
