Shawl Fragment (India)

This is a Shawl fragment. It is dated early 19th century and we acquired it in 1954. Its medium is wool and its technique is interlocked twill tapestry weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

The boteh, or paisley motif, is derived from Persian, Indian, and European sources, and developed its current form, characterized by a wilting tip, during the western craze for Kashmir shawls in the late 18th and 19th centuries.
