At the top of this gilded bronze seal is a flat circular disk containing the negative impression of the seal. The seal sits on top of a long, tapered neck. At the point where the neck and seal meet are droplets and twisting elements of gilded bronze. These elements continue about a quarter of the way down the neck. About halfway down, the neck begins to expand into the base. Raised lines fall down the neck, swirling at the base outward like a propeller. They expand outward as the base expands outwards beyond the neck of the seal creating a disk. The effect recalls waves in the water. At one side of the circular base a swirling line seems to splash over the edge, as an area of the gilded bronze breaks the plane of the base with swirls and droplet-like forms.

This is a seal. It was designed by Hector Guimard and founded by Paul Philippon. It is dated 1909–1912 and we acquired it in 1956. Its medium is bronze, gold. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
