Handbag (USA)

This is a Handbag. It was designed by Edith Huntington Snow and woven by Edith Huntington Snow. It is dated 1927 and we acquired it in 1956. Its medium is silk and cotton (confirmed by microscopy), copper frame, jadeite cabochon and its technique is plain weave with discontinuous wefts (tapestry). It is a part of the Textiles department.

A flat, rectangular vanity case with narrow alternating vertical stripes in black enamel and polished gold, continuing from the top surface down the front side. Centered near the bottom edge of the top surface is a rich green emerald carved with a floral motif, accented by sparkling diamonds at each side and surrounded by an oval-shaped glossy black enamel border. Along the side edges of the bottom third of the top surface, wrapping down the front side, are lines of diamonds, flanked by fin-shaped diamond-set tabs to open the case. The tabs curve over the edges of the case. The case is squarely positioned on a softly reflective white background.
